Empowering Youth to Combat Climate Change: A Debate Competition at Haneefa Nursing College

To raise awareness about the drastic effects of climate change and the role of youth in mitigating it, a debate competition with the theme “I Can Save/Protect Myself and the Earth” was held at Haneefa Nursing College, Mazbugh Road, Fruit Mandi Sopore.

Various prominent personalities attended the event, including the chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore Shri Shabir Ahmad Raina, Dr. Ghulam Jeelani Zargar (ex-CMO Baramulla), Prof. Mohammad Abdullah Charoo (ex-Chairman JK Bose), Mr. Hakim Khalid (Advisor Board of Directors), Prof. Jaya David Shirshetty (Principal, Haneefa Nursing College), and Mr. Irshad Ahmad Bhat (Advisor, Gulistan TV). The primary objective of the program was to create awareness among people about the effects of climate change caused by harmful substances, deforestation, and other factors. The speakers highlighted the significant role individuals and groups can play in saving the Earth and making it a wonderful place to live.

Throughout the day, students from various institutions, including SRM Welkin Higher Secondary School Sopore, Sanctorium Public School Lalad Sopore, Govt Boys’ Higher Secondary School Sopore, Public Higher Secondary Institute Tujar Sharief, St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Govt Higher Secondary Hadipora, and Haneefa Nursing College, spoke on the topic. They emphasized the importance of both individual and collective actions in preventing damage to the Earth and discussed ways to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The program concluded with a prize distribution ceremony. Noorain Rashid from SRM Welkin Higher Secondary School secured the first position, followed by Moomin Mushtaq from Hakim Sanaullah Institute of Paramedical Sciences and Technology Mazbugh Sopore (second position), and Amariya Fayaz from Haneefa Nursing College Mazbugh Sopore (third position). Trophies and cash prizes were awarded to the winners.

The event concluded with wise words from the honorable chief guest, Shri Shabir Ahmad Raina, who reiterated the importance of individual efforts in preventing climate change and protecting the Earth.
